Finding the UK’s smallest bee
I did a presentation once to a group of people about bees. Included within the talk was a section on the UK’s smallest bee, the Small Scissor Bee. I was fascinated by how tiny it was and the habit of the male bees that sleep overnight in their favourite flowers. They are entirely dependant on bellflowers with a preference for harebells and other campanulas in the garden. I decided to try to attract some to my garden by planting a number of Canterbury Bells. I am delighted to say, they duly obliged and if I didn’t know any different, I would have thought they were tiny flies. The picture’s not great but proof of their presence.
